Good news for everyone who enjoyed the images the Hubble Space Telescope sent back to Earth, it won’t be left to die, there will be a new mission to upgrade its hardware. The US space agency NASA has announced that a space shuttle will be dispatched to the telescope to service it. Hubble is already 16 years old and it’s starting to show, some of it’s system are beginning to fail, and urgently needs some repairs and upgrades. NASA wants to send the space shuttle Discovery to the telescope in 2008. If the service mission is not completed the Hubble Space Telescope may stop working in 3 years time. Besides repairs there will be 2 new upgrades added to Hubble, both will improve Hubble’s ability to probe distant, faint objects. NASA is planning to launch a new telescope in 2013, the James Webb Space Telescope.

The orbiting observatory has astounded astronomers and the public alike with its amazing pictures of the cosmos, but its systems are beginning to fail.

Dr Griffin told Nasa employees that recent modifications to the shuttle launch system meant it was now safe to send a crew to work on Hubble.

The mission, which will use the shuttle Discovery, should launch in 2008.

From : Hubble telescope will get upgrade.

  1. You need to do a grammer check on your paragraph about the Hubble Telescope.

“NASA wants to sent space shuttle Discovery to the telescope in 2008.”

    should read:

“NASA wants to (send the) space shuttle Discovery to the telescope in 2008.”

  2. Sorry about that, it has been fixed.

    Thanks.

  3. It’s comical that the person asking that the “grammer” be fixed in this story doesn’t spell grammar correctly. It’s even more comical that the person who responded, didn’t notice.

  4. “grammar” is the correct spelling, not “grammer

  5. More comical still is that none of you noticed this error: “upgrade it’s hardware.” Upgrade it is hardware? Its*

  6. Interesting discussion.

Perhaps someone should write a paper on “selective error detection by humans”.

  7. The Hubble space telescope has done a lot for science. Hope it stays operational for a few more years!

  8. The Hubble Space Telescope takes awsome pics. It’ll B a shame if it doesn’t stay operational.

  9. Ok, you guys are great! So this is my first time on this website, and I get to learn about grammar. Thanks for the lesson guys. Too funny.

hubble telescope pictures are really stunning, why dont we have more hubbles in the space

  11. Is there any way to view in real time to have as a screen saver or is that asking too much?

    Angela

  12. Thanks to NASA for the great responsibility of putting Hubble up in space. It has helped a great deal in the area of science. It would be a great loss if we loose it.

  13. “loose it” or “lose it”? I think we should keep it or build a new one. Hubble! Hubble!

  14. Who carezzz about the spelinggg you bunch of “dorks” …..

The Hubble telescope is one of the most magnificant things ever built by man !!

To even imagine that it is also orbiting the Earth as well …. unbelievable ….

One of the largest telescopes on the Earth is the Palomar telescope in southern California, a much larger telescope, which has, indeed, produced some fantastic images of outer space and deep sky objects ! Anyone who has ever visited the Palomar Observatory and looked through the eyepiece will never think of the night sky the same. After peeking through the eyepiece of this great scope, one will have dreams of planets, star clusters, and other space wonders for the rest of their life !! Absolutely amazing !!

The Hubble, because it is high above the dense air near ground level, has resolution and clarity that is just incredible, even though it is significantly smaller than the Palomar scope. Absolutely spectacular….

My favorite Hubble photos are the pics of Jupiter with all of the intricate details of the rings and bands visible. WOW !! Looks like you could just reach out and touch them (if your arms were 500 “warp”-miles long !)

The close up imagery from the Hubble is unbelievable. Newton himself would faint if he saw these images……

I hope the Hubble images get more people interested in telescopes (the coolest things ever invented !!), astronomy, and science.

The images that the Hubble has given us are to be cherished and marveled at forever …… what an accomplishment !

NASA …..PLEASE KEEP PROJECTS LIKE THE HUBBLE (AND BEYOND !) ALIVE …….. AND …… GIVE US SOME MORE GREAT PHOTOS OF OUR UNIVERSE !!!

  15. YEAH, I AGREE WITH DAN, CAN YOU SAY SPELL CHECK?

  16. NASA does this kind of work so well. How glorious to reach out into the Universe. Now, would you please dump that space junk with its tax sucking, fun for foreigners, black hole vacuum on resources, the International Space Station. Can you please get back to true American initiatives and get back into studying space instead of diplomacy?

  17. Hello I was hoping to use this image of the Hubble for a project- I work for a web design company and we are making a flash animation about technological transitions. Do you have the credits?

  18. Hello Sophie,

Please check http://hubble.nasa.gov/multimedia/astronomy.php for more information regarding the usage of images from the NASA website.

  19. New to this!! If it wasn’t for the Hubble telesocpe etc we would not even have the most outstanding photos we have today on record.
Any photos that have been taken will be remembered forever to come.!! Unfortunately there is minority of people in this world amoung us, that presented with the information that has been given to us they still refuse to accept the situation that meybe life does exist in another solar system.
Keep on with the pictures as this is the only avenue we have pursue the outer limits. The pictures are make you want to cry because they are so beautiful!!!!

  20. WELL WE THINK THAT THIS IS A GRATE SCIENTIFIC OBJECT. IT HAS HELPED EVERY ONE.

  21. god is real scicence is cool but big bang was not real
    godisreal@hotmail.com

  22. well i think that the hubble telescope is super-cali-freaken-awesome
10 bucks someone is gonna correct me on that lol
we are doing astronomy in science and it is amazing how much they have learnt in the past century due to scientists and teloscopes like the great HUBBLE

  23. Harry, I’m not going to correct you. Except for you God I will deny the fact that the big bang didn’t happen because it did. it happened whe when I !#$@#$ you’re mom.

  24. There is a new and improved telescope being launched around 2013 that will be webed in the moon earth and sun
